Commuter Map
Mind the gap: The commuter student experienceThis project maps the routes commuter students take to get to their classes. It tells the story of three individual students an their personal journeys to class, while also comparing these times with the average dorm commute to campus. Created for Washington Square News’ Commuter Issue.
Brainstorming
- We knew we wanted to represent commuter student routes in general, but before receiving the specific interviews, we grappled with different ways of representing commutes through general areas students live or an interactive map
Things We Asked Ourselves
- How do we represent commuter students equally?
- How can we compare on-campus commutes to these commutes in a logical and timely way?
- How can we represent different modes of transporation?
Telling the Story
- Taking interviews from students who commute to campus, connecting on a personal level
- Show the drastic difference between the commutes of commuter students and those living on campus through seamless zooming
- Include a variety of transportation methods including walking, subway, other trains, and driving
For this data visualization, I used Illustrator to design the smaller elements and edited them in After Effects to simulate the transportation routes.
